I remember that game in 1987 against Boston when Brad, one of the few players left who didn't wear a helmet, was crushed by a couple of Bruin players right at the end of the players bench. His head slammed into the plexiglass partition between the benches, he went down to the ice and banged his head. There was blood on the ice, convulsions, and if I remember correctly, he swallowed his tongue.

I also think that may have been the game when Hextall scored his first goal.

That 1987 team was perhaps the best team ever to wear the orange & black, but they unfortunately ran into what could likely be the best hockey team of all time - in their prime - the mid 80's Oilers teams.

Looking back on it, I kind of wish I didn't hate them as much as I did because I could have appreciated seeing Gretzky play more than I did. Still though, like Brad, I can't stand seeing that Oilers crest either. Especially now that they went back to those unis.

Excellent Blog Marshy! I look forward to more like it. I'm glad you are able to look back on your flyers career so positively. Flyers fans have always, and will always, have a soft spot for hard working, no nonsense players like yourself. It's no wonder you were a fan favorite here.

I was at that game against the Bruins. It was the game in which Hexy scored his first goal. Sadly, I missed the goal as the guy who drove insisted on leaving early to beat the traffic. I never totally forgave him and, to this day, refuse to leave a game before the final horn.

Welcome Mr Marsh!

You will always be one of the characters of that awful era in Leaf History! Leaf fans always appreciated your efforts and heart. You were one of the good guys, right up there with Brubaker and Moter City Smitty!

That is the same game Hexy scored his first, one of the few VCR tapes I still have around the house, somewhere.

You guys will always have a place in the hearts of Flyers fans. As beloved as the Bullies teams of the 1970's are, the mid 1980's Flyers teams remain my favorite. As a fan we always knew that win, lose or tie we could count on you guys leaving everything on the ice.

I still have a set of 1987 Topps hockey cards, in a frame on my desk, with you and 12 of your teammates from that year.

Very enjoyable tale of your career journeys, Brad. Thanks for sharing and I look forward to the rest of the stories you have to share

As a life-long Flyer's fan, I still hate the Oilers too...and Gretzky was just a cherry-picker who got preferential treatment from the refs. He only scored all those goal because the refs wouldn't let anyone touch him

Great stuff.
I was about 8 yrs old when I met Marshy at an event with Poulin, Kerr, and Frosty in the early-mid eighties. You would have thought he was my uncle from the kind, caring way he spoke to me. I became a huge fan after that, and the 87 team remains my favorite.
Looking forward to more blogs!
